California is a no fault state for dissolution of marriage proceedings. This means that neither party to a divorce proceeding needs to give a reason for seeking a divorce, other than there are irreconcilable differences that have lead to an irremediable breakdown in the marriage. In other words, the marriage is broke and it cannot be fixed. Most divorce proceedings fall under this category. The other reason that a court may grant a divorce is on the grounds of incurable insanity.
